The Secular Evolution of a Close Ring–Satellite System: The Excitation of Spiral Bending Waves at a Nearby Gap Edge

چکیده

The secular perturbations exerted by an inclined satellite orbiting in a gap in a broad planetary ring tends to excite the inclinations of the nearby ring particles, and the ring’s self–gravity can allow that disturbance to propagate away in the form of a spiral bending wave. The amplitude of this spiral bending wave is determined, as well as the wavelength, which shrinks as the waves propagate outwards due to the effects of the central planet’s oblateness. The excitation of these bending waves also damps the satellite’s inclination I. This secular I damping is also compared to the inclination excitation that is due to the satellite’s many other vertical resonances in the ring, and the condition for inclination damping is determined. The secular I damping is likely responsible for confining the orbits of Saturn’s two known gap–embedded moons, Pan and Daphnis, to the ring plane. Subject headings: planets: rings

The Secular Evolution of a Close Ring–Satellite System: The Excitation of Spiral Density Waves at a Nearby Gap Edge

The Lagrange planetary equations are used to study to secular evolution of a small, eccentric satellite that orbits within a narrow gap in a broad, selfgravitating planetary ring. These equations show that the satellite’s secular perturbations of the ring will excite a very long-wavelength spiral density wave that propagates away from the gap’s outer edge. The amplitude of these waves, as well ...

Excitation of Inclinations in Ring - Satellite Systems

Resonant gravitational interactions between a ring and a satellite produce secular variations of their orbital inclinations. Interactions at vertical resonances, analogous to Lindblad resonances but involving inclinations instead of eccentricities, excite inclinations. There is no inclination analog of the corotation resonance. An equatorial ring changes the inclination of a nearby satellite in...

Resonant Thickening of Disks by Small Satellite Galaxies

We study the vertical heating and thickening of galaxy disks due to accretion of small satellites. Our simulations are restricted to axial symmetry, which largely eliminates numerical evolution of the target galaxy but requires the trajectory of the satellite to be along the symmetry axis of the target. We find that direct heating of disk stars by the satellite is not important because the sate...

Predictions for a Planet Just inside Fomalhaut’s Eccentric Ring

We propose that the eccentricity and sharpness of the edge of Fomalhaut’s disk are due to a planet just interior to the ring edge. The collision timescale consistent with the disk opacity is long enough that spiral density waves cannot be driven near the planet. The ring edge is likely to be located at the boundary of a chaotic zone in the corotation region of the planet. We find that this zone...

Redistribution of Fibers in the Structure of Hollow Ring Spun Yarn

Core yarn was spun by introducing a PVA multifilament as the core through the yarn forming zone of a ring spinning frame and viscose fibers as the sheath containing tracer fibers. The water soluble PVA multifilament was extracted from the yarn structure. Then internal structure and properties of the hollow ring yarn was assessed and compared with those of typical ring yarns. Also, two plain fab...
